Club History

Bridgend Street of Splott, Cardiff, were originally formed in 1889, originating as a church team. The club nickname is The Mission - named after the building and institution that provided so much entertainment to so many people in what was a tough and poor part of the capital in years gone by.

The actual Bridgend Street was demolished back in 1972 along with 17 other streets in a slum regeneration scheme, leaving a gaping hole in the community and thus forcing a lot of residents to locate to other parts of Cardiff. It was once a vibrant centre for sports and recreation among the tight-knit community which was located in the shadows of the huge former East Moors Steelworks plant.

Despite the demolition the name proudly remained intact and to this day the club has continued to prosper, initially spending most of its life in the Cardiff & District Football League. After winning countless local league and cup titles The Street gained promotion to the South Wales Senior League in 1994 and went on to win its championship a record five times. In addition to local league titles and cups The Street trophy cabinet has housed The South Wales Senior Cup, The South Wales Intermediate Cup (twice) and the C.W. Bruty Cup (twice).

In 2011 the club realised its ambition by being promoted to the Welsh League. Season 2015-16 saw the club reach its highest ever league position when it finished third in Division Three only to be denied promotion by the Welsh League Management Committee who that season decided to promote only two clubs as opposed to the normal three.

Bridgend Street's club house is located a short distance from its Willow's ground which is housed within the site of Willows High School. Its headquarters is the New Fleurs Sports & Social Club which ironically is located just yards from the site that the Street was built on.
