Club History
St Joseph's Football Club are based out of St Joseph’s Catholic Sports & Social Club in Whitchurch Road, , formed in 1967.
We draw on players from the local community and have had a team in the Cardiff & District League for the past 50 years and in 1992/3 season qualified to play in the South Wales Senior League after winning Cardiff & District Premier League. We have been playing in this league ever since, which up until recently amalgamated with the South Wales Amateur League which is now known as the South Wales Alliance League, playing in the Second Division.
Having joined Cardiff & District League at U16 level back in 1967, one of the first senior kits that we owned was as a result of winning a regional Findus Frozen Foods competition held in the run up to the 1970 World Cup. We were presented with a full kit and boots (12 shirts, shorts and socks and 12 Gola boots) by the then Cardiff City Manager Jimmy Scoular. The competition was to state in no more than 20 words something about the forthcoming world cup, and the winning line was:
‘You can Bank on Moore of the Ball providing Lee find us Osgood upfront’
Special mention and thanks must go to our club founders – Colin Regan (coach & secretary), Doug Lewis, Ted Palmer, Bob Maunder, Peter Hughes & John Poole who most, unfortunately are no longer with us. Today we are left with two survivors Colin & John who will hopefully be in attendance for this match and will also be taking pride of place at our 50th Anniversary Dinner.
The club has always been well run and are lucky to have a group of players and supporters who have stayed loyal to our club. In our heyday we fielded 4 senior teams (which the 4thteam had to be re-named as St Joseph’s Old Boys) and we also had a youth team which not many clubs in the South Wales Area can boast of. In the earlier years we also had two Champion Boxers playing for St Joe’s namely Pat Thomas & Billy Waith. We also had a player Mike Thompson who was selected to play for Wales at under 18 level.
Keeping St Josephs in the family tradition, all of our founder members either played themselves or coached their children to play for St Joes. Even 50 years on from when we were founded, we continue to field two senior teams and a junior side under 15’s (being run b Stephen Mustey) in the Cardiff & District and Alliance League, and continue to draw on players from the local community. Ex-players, managers and officials continue to follow the teams progress and friendship’s forged at St Joseph’s are forged for life.
We have been very fortunate over the years with regards to local small businesses sponsoring our football club providing much needed financial help towards team kits and equipment. Most of these sponsors are businesses owned by past & current players, which we at St Josephs would like to thank the following companies for all of their support over the years which we hope will continue in the future: A & N Lewis - Peter & Nigel Lewis (son of Doug Lewis a founder member), H & S Electrical Services - Richard Huxford (Oyler) & Kevin Stanworth, Granite Brick - Brian Carroll, Cafe North - Rachel Jones, DAJ Home Improvements - David Jones, Source - Lee & Dean Pattison, Admiral Insurance - David Johnson & Graham Newton, The Celtic Coast Fish Company - Gareth Coleman, JLP Electrical & Fire Ltd - Joseph Lewis (Grandson of Doug Lewis)
