HISTORY

Dinas Powys Football Club are former Amateur League Champions for 3 successive seasons before they entered the Welsh League (forerunner of the Ardal Leagues) in 2000 - winning the play-off on their 3rd attempt. During this period Dinas Powys also won the FAW Trophy in 1998

They play at the Murchfield in Dinas Powys and will, no doubt have a rivalry with Cardiff Airport - the 2nd Vale of Glamorgan team in the Premier Division

History

Dinas Powys is an integral part of village life and was formed in 1971 as a junior club playing in the Barry & District Football League.

As the club grew and became successful at junior level, it amalgamated with local senior side Swan Stars FC in 1976. The original club colours were red & white stripes, red shorts & socks. The new senior team played in the Cardiff Combination League, and in 1979 became the first winners of the Milsom & Harries Cup, beating Ely Rangers 3-2 at Ninian Park

The club made the step up into the South Wales Amateur League in 1990 and the success of the club grew, culminating in finishing champions in 1998. However, progression to the Welsh Football League was ended by Caerau (Ely) in a 1-0 play off defeat at Coychurch Road in Bridgend. The club did win the prestigious FAW Trophy though, beating Llanrwst 2-0 in the Final at Latham Park, in Newtown. As a result of this success the club was profiled on S4C Sports programme ‘Gol’, and was voted the village club of the year in Welsh Football Magazine.

The following season the club again won the South Wales Amateur League as well as the Corinthian Cup. Promotion to the Welsh Football League ended in heartbreak again though as AFC Llwydcoed won the play off in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw, again at Coychurch Road in Bridgend

1999-00 was to be the year the club finally gained promotion to the Welsh Football League after a third South Wales Amateur League triumph in a row led to another playoff final, this time against Bettws, 2-1 at Cwrt-yr-Ala in Ely.

The first season in Division Three saw the club miss out on promotion by a point to Treharris Athletic, but the following season the club finished runners up in Division Three behind Newport YMCA, scoring 96 league goals in the process with 26 wins out of 34 games. In 2002-03 the club went one better winning the Division Two Championship, scoring 97 league goals in the process with 24 wins in 34 games to be promoted to Welsh League Division One.

The first season at this level saw the club finish in 6th place, the following three seasons saw inconsistent performances, but 2007-08 produced Dinas Powys highest ever league finish, runners up behind Goytre United, with 25 wins in 34 games and 92 league goals. The club were relegated though in 2009-10 and since then have plied their trade in Division Two, maintaining Welsh League status

We are now one of the largest clubs in South Wales, with nearly 500 members providing football for all age groups catering for girls, boys and men of all ages. Weekly football is provided for up to 20 junior teams from mini (U6s) to youth (U18s), while the club has seen six Dinas Powys players having representative caps for the Welsh Learning Disability Team.

We are affiliated to the South Wales Football Association, Welsh Football League, South Wales Youth League, Vale of Glamorgan League and SWWG League.

In 2019/20 after completing the developments at the Murch Field, the club were awarded their Tier 3 licence and entry into the new Ardal Southern League.
