Club History

If you trawl through the history books to find the first mention of the club, you will see this in 1934, through the amalgamation of a number of upper Rhondda sides. It is at this point that the story of Blaenrhondda AFC began. You will find the club located at the top of the Rhondda Fawr Valley.

During its existence there have been many high points with success in the form of numerous promotions to higher divisions and higher leagues and also cup finals, along with the inevitable lows.

For many years, the club played in various divisions within the Welsh League, sometimes the changes in division being associated with league re-organisations.

Under the leadership of the then manager David Carpenter (manager 1967-1974) a former player from the age of 18 and longest serving committee member with over 60 years with the club, he guided Blaenrhondda to promotion to Division One in 1970/71.

Under the leadership of Gwyn Phillips in his first season as manager following 16 years with the club as player and official, the club gained promotion to the Premier Division in 1974/75. This saw Blaenrhondda become the third valley side in this division, joining Ton Pentre and Ferndale.

Following relegation not long after this promotion, the club spent a period of time in the First Division when under manager Wynford Luldlow they were successful again in returning to the Premier Division in 1981/82.

One of Blaenrhondda biggest successes came in the SA Brains Cup when in the 1989/90 season Blaenrhondda reached their first and only cup final. Under manager Lyn Rees, Blaenrhondda marched to the final having defeated, Tonyrefail, Ferndale, Bridgend, Aberystwyth and Brecon before meeting Llanelli in the final and defeating them 2-1 after extra time becoming the Rhondda’s first ever SA Brains Cup winning team.

During the 90’s the club had mixed success, yo-yoing between Division Two and Three of the Welsh League. The club however struggled to maintain their Welsh League status and were relegated to the then South Wales Amateur League in 2006, playing for several seasons within this league.

Once again, after several seasons and struggles to maintain consistency of both players and managers the club yo-yoed between Divisions One and Two. They were further relegated to the Rhondda League in 2014. They were to play local football for a few seasons, before under manager Matthew Howells, having completed an unbeaten season in the league and being finalists in the Lucania Cup they successfully negotiated the play-offs to gain promotion to the South Wales Alliance League for the 2017/18 season.
